Jennifer Iwamoto, DVM, CPIA, is the Director of Internal and IACUC Operations in the Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) at the University of Washington (UW). Jennifer joined OAW in 2015 as a Review Scientist, where her responsibilities have included protocol review, grant-protocol congruence review, post-approval monitoring, and interacting with regulatory entities. Jennifer became a Director in 2022. In her current role, Jennifer oversees the internal operations of OAW as well as IACUC-related processes such as semi-annual facility inspections and program reviews, as well as investigation and reporting to the IACUC of animal welfare concerns and protocol noncompliances. She also serves as Vice Chair on UW's IACUC. Jennifer enjoys the collaborative nature of her work, and is interested in efforts to increase openness and public engagement in biomedical research.
Prior to entering the field of animal welfare and regulatory compliance, Jennifer received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Washington State University and completed an internship in equine medicine at the Ohio State University. She worked for 4 years in a research lab, where she used rodent and non-human primate models to investigate the use of drug-lipid nanoparticles for the treatment of HIV and cancer. Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys gardening, hiking, and spending time with her husband and two young children.
