Taunton Paine, MA is the Director of the Scientific Data Sharing Policy Division in the Office of Science Policy at the NIH. Taunton leads a team responsible for a broad array of issues relating to data sharing and access, including the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing, and the NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy. Taunton also works with other NIH senior leaders in identifying scientific data sharing issues that require trans-NIH coordination. Previously, he led the Clinical Research Policy team as a senior policy analyst and advised on matters related to the Common Rule, Certificates of Confidentiality, HIPAA, and other privacy and human participant protections issues. Before that, he worked on issues relating to dual use research. He holds a dual master’s degree from Columbia University and London School of Economics and Political Science, where he studied science and technology in the history of international relations.
