Dr. Dondrae Coble received a Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Animal Science from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, before obtaining a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed residency training at Emory University and is recognized as a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. He previously held a faculty position at The Ohio State University and was previously the Director and Attending Veterinarian at The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He joined the Comparative Medicine Branch of NIEHS as a senior scientist, animal program director, and attending veterinarian in 2021. He received the NIH Director’s Challenge Innovation Award entitled “Machine vision-enabled behavioral tracking for cross-species extrapolation” in 2021. This award brings together collaborators from the NIEHS Division of Intramural Research (DIR) and Division of the National Toxicology Program (DNTP), as well as the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB).
Dr. Coble is passionate about diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts within veterinary medicine. Tuskegee University educates 70% of the African American veterinarians in the United States. In addition, Tuskegee University is the only veterinary school located at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Dr. Coble previously served as the Interim Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs and Chairperson of the Admissions Committee at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Coble served as the Co-Chairperson of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine Diversity Committee. Additional professional activities related to diversity efforts include serving a Chairperson for the Abigail Wexner Research Institute Workforce Diversity Working Group and previous Chairperson of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Equity and Inclusion Task Force. Dr. Coble currently serves as the Chairperson of the Division of Intramural Research DEIA Working Group at NIEHS. Dr. Coble spends countless hours participating in veterinary outreach efforts for children ranging from kindergarten to college students.
