Mr. Mose Herne is a member of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation (Turtle Clan). He is the Director of Planning, Evaluation, and Research at the Indian Health Service and co-chairs the White House NSTC Subcommittee on Indigenous Knowledge. Mr. Herne has served as the senior advisor for the Tribal Health Research Office at the National Institutes of Health, Chief Executive Officer for the Hopi Health Care Center, and Health Science Administrator, acting Deputy Director and acting Director in the Division of Behavioral Health, Office of Clinical and Preventive Services, Indian Health Service.
Mr. Herne has a broad range of experience that includes clinical behavioral health positions with the Veterans Health Administration and IHS Urban Indian Health Programs, adjunct faculty with the Boston University Psychology Department and Fitchburg State College Department of Behavioral Sciences, service as the Public Health Director for the Franklin County Health Department in New York State, and active duty military service. He is a Gulf War and Navy veteran, having served as a nuclear propulsion plant operator on fleet ballistic missile and fast attack submarines.
Mr. Herne completed his undergraduate work in psychology and neurobiology at Clarkson University, his Master of Science degree in Neuroscience at Brandeis University, and his Master of Public Health degree in Environmental Health Sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health. He has authored peer-reviewed scientific publications addressing a range of issues, including the epidemiology of intentional injury, Native men’s health, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and COVID-19 pandemic response.
