B02 - [IN-PERSON/RECORDED] Grappling With “Classic” Research Ethics Cases: An Exercise in Humility and Course Correction
Monday, December 4, 2023
2:15 PM – 3:15 PM ET
Location: Room 143 AB
This session will be offered in-person and recorded for on-demand access by in-person PRIMR23 attendees registered for this day, and PRIMR23/SBER23 Virtual Meeting registrants.
This session will reframe enduring lessons from familiar/classic research ethics cases to correct some common misperceptions and oversimplifications. Often characterized as isolated instances of bad behavior with straightforward moral lessons, these cases actually illustrate more common problematic practices and behaviors that have caused ongoing stigmatization and harm to communities. This session will also introduce alternative examples of cases that emphasize community engagement and empowerment as positive examples of ethical research.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss how to reframe cases not (only) as failures of informed consent, but of broader equity and justice considerations
Consider how to “flip the script” to focus on stories of resilience and successful collaboration, and to bring in positive examples of what successful collaboration and trust-building look like
Learn how to be transparent about our own positionality to cases and how we’ve evolved in our personal understanding over time
