This session will be offered in-person and recorded for on-demand access by in-person PRIMR23 attendees registered for this day, and PRIMR23/SBER23 Virtual Meeting registrants.

HRPPs/IRBs are innovating to increase outreach, engagement, and collaboration with their local communities. Drawing on lessons learned from community-engaged and participatory research approaches, this session will review common misconceptions, discuss the benefits of flexibility, and describe emerging approaches for HRPPs to engage with their local communities. Lastly, we will share one academic medical center HRPP’s experience establishing a community advisory board to provide the community’s perspectives of research to the IRB.

Learning Objectives:

  • Briefly review the regulatory requirement and identify common misconceptions in the HRPP community about how to fulfill it
  • Identify the benefits of HRPPs reaching out to and engaging with potential research participants and research partners in their local communities
  • Describe strategies for reaching out to potential research participants and research partners in the local community (bringing the IRB to the people)
  • Describe strategies for meaningfully engaging community stakeholders in human research protections (bringing the people to the IRB)
