Eric Mah, EdD, MHS is Associate Dean at the University of California San Diego, where he leads the administrative operations of its central clinical research program as well as its National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA). Prior to UC San Diego, he served in several IRB leadership positions, including as Institutional Official of a large academic medical center. Dr. Mah has taught courses in the responsible conduct of research over the last two decades, developed a 4-unit graduate course on ethics in clinical research for the City University New York System, trained dozens of IRB members and staff, including helping to establish one of the first IRBs in Bolivia, and is one of the founding members of the Asian Pacific Research Integrity Network. In 2018, he co-founded the Consortium for Applied Research Ethics – Quality (CARE-Q.org), a joint effort between the University of California and Stanford University, to support high-quality IRB programs nationally. He has served on conference planning committees for Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) and chaired its Diversity Advisory Group for many years. He is currently serving on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Workgroup on Administrative Research Personnel and Harvard Catalyst’s SMART IRB Harmonization National Steering Committee, and a 4-year appointment on the US Department of Health & Human Services Secretary’s (DHHS) Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP) as a subject matter expert for human subjects research.
