Challace Pahlevan-Ibrekic, MBE, CIP is the Director of Regulatory Affairs for the Institute of Health System Science (IHSS), one of five institutes for medical research affiliated with Northwell Health, the largest healthcare provider in New York State. Her current scope includes regulatory oversight of transformative biomedical and behavioral research conducted by Institute faculty and staff, including ethical considerations for artificial intelligence across different research and clinical spectrums. Prior positions included regulatory compliance and auditing roles for human and animal research programs as well as senior administrative leadership and oversight of multiple biomedical and social/behavioral IRBs.
Her current focus is ethical evaluation and regulatory review of Artificial Intelligence, development of responsible and ethical data sharing guidelines and transformative biomedical and behavioral virtual research methodologies that target and promote health innovations and outcomes. Challace is a Bioethicist and earned an undergraduate degree in Earth Science (Paleoclimate), as well as a Masters in Bioethics from Columbia University. In addition to regulatory oversight for the Institute, she also serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and IRB member for Northwell Health and Yale University.
Challace is committed to fostering active collaboration and discussions about emerging technologies and innovative research to increase understanding between IRB members and researchers. She is an active member of the Research Data Alliance Artificial Intelligence/Data Visitation (RDA AI/DV) work group, focused on development of guidance to assist ethics committees in understanding questions, methods and procedures for reviewing AI and DV in research, and develops content for the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program).
