Sarah Thurston is the Coordinator of Animal Behavior and Welfare Management Programs for Global Animal Welfare & Training with Charles River Laboratories. In this role, Sarah primarily focuses on species-specific behavior groups, welfare working groups, welfare assessment tools, and the creation of educational materials for employees of Charles River. Prior to working at Charles River, Sarah worked at the University of Michigan in the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine where she coordinated the transgenic breeding and social housing rabbit colony prior to joining the Refinement and Enrichment Advancements Laboratory. She managed refinement and welfare projects as well as leading social housing initiatives as the unit’s Social Housing Coordinator. Sarah was also the co-coordinator of the Compassion Awareness Project and a founding member of the Behavioral Welfare Group. Sarah is also a member of the 3Rs collaborative and a member of the MI-AALAS Executive Council. Sarah is a Certified Laboratory Animal Behavior Professional through the Animal Behavior Institute.
