Dr. Meg Kirchgessner is currently a wildlife veterinarian with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She is leading the effort to develop the National Wildlfe Refuge System (NWRS) Animal Welfare Program, which will include an Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC). Once assembled, she will be the Attending Veterinarian of the NWRS ACUC. Dr. Kirchgessner also spends a significant portion of her time supporting the wildlife health needs of national wildlife refuges and collaborating with her colleagues in the Wildlife Health office on various subjects, including One Health, chemical capture, wildlife health- and welfare- related policy, and staff trainings. Previously, Dr. Kirchgessner was the wildlife veterinarian for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and was the attending veterinarian for the IACUC at Bridgewater College, located in northwestern Virginia. She studied the interspecies transmission of bovine viral diarrhea virus and Coxiella burnetii while pursuing her PhD in wildlife and fisheries management from the S.U.N.Y College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY, in 2012. She graduated from the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. Dr. Kirchgessner currently resides in Blacksburg, Virginia.
