Lance H. Bassage, II, VMD, DACVS, has been the Director of the National Policy Staff for USDA-APHIS-Animal Care since May 2021. Dr. Bassage supervises 5 Senior Veterinary Medical Officers, who have subject matter expertise in different species protected by the Animal Welfare Act, and the various animal industries subject to regulation under the Act. He received his B.A. in Biology from Gettysburg College in 1984 and his V.M.D. summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. He then completed an internship and residency in large animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1999. He has held university faculty positions in equine or large animal surgery at 3 schools of veterinary medicine and has written several book chapters and published in peer-reviewed journals on subjects related to equine surgery and lameness. Dr. Bassage also worked in private clinical practice for 8 years in the Hudson Valley region of New York. He joined APHIS-Veterinary Services in 2014 as an Export Veterinary Medical Officer in Albany, NY and in 2015 was promoted to Director/Veterinarian-in-Charge of Service Center Albany.
