Dr. Andrea Rossing McDowell is the (remote) HRPP Administrator at Western Washington University. As the IRB Administrator at Seattle University (a role she held for more than a decade), Andrea established clearer IRB policies, more effective guidance and swift turnaround times, stronger educational outreach, and a positive, collegial reputation across campus. Andrea is now enjoying getting to know the WWU research community and supporting them in their endeavors through the HRPP. Andrea often presents for PRIM&R on SBER and small research programs, as well as research on college campuses; she has also served on conference planning committees and co-chaired the PRIM&R SBER preconference. She authored the most updated CITI module on students in research and serves as a CITI peer review editor. With more than 30 years of professional writing experience, Andrea also teaches Business Communication and Business Editing for the SU Albers School of Business and Economics. She provides editing services on communication tasks and manuscripts of all lengths, as well as public speaking consulting. Her research on non-human animals in Russian and Soviet literature has been published in several journals; her article on Bulgakov’s “Heart of a Dog” was recently included in the book _Short Story Criticism: Mikhail Bulgakov_. Andrea holds bachelor’s degrees in both Journalism and Russian literature from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Slavic Studies, and a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs administration from Indiana University-Bloomington, where she also worked as speechwriter for the Chancellor. Andrea is also available to consult with individuals and organizations wishing to develop clear, efficient, and persuasive communication internally and externally; to streamline more effective forms and practices; and to improve interpersonal relations among colleagues. As a neurodivergent professional, Andrea enjoys connecting with other neurospicy individuals to promote ND awareness and to encourage normalizing ND supports in professional settings.
