Professor Karen Froud, Ph.D., CIP, is Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Education and the IRB Chair at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research uses brain imaging techniques to investigate questions about the neuroscience of language, learning, and cognitive processing across the lifespan, with an emphasis on multilingualism, literacy, and speech-language impairment. Her work centers the importance of pedagogical and clinical applications for effective communication, language, and learning for all. Research ethics are an integral part of this work and of her student teaching and mentoring; in more than twenty years in graduate education, she has directly mentored many masters students, 19 doctoral students, and four postdoctoral fellows in her lab, as well as many more trainees across other research groups. As IRB Chair, she takes a hands-on approach to training and supporting researchers from students through to senior investigators, and has been integral in the development of a comprehensive human research protection program at her institution.
