Dr. Klein is the USDA Forest Service (USFS) IACUC Attending Veterinarian (AV) and the National Program Lead for Fish & Wildlife Health. Previously, she worked at USDA APHIS Veterinary Services as Lead for the National Cervid Health and Poultry Health Programs, and was the Wildlife Disease Liaison focused on disease transmission control at the domestic animal – wildlife interface. She also served as Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service at FDA investigating foodborne diseases. Her veterinary career began at the USFWS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) managing animal health and disease investigations. She served as PWRC IACUC AV, participated in environmental toxicology research, and co-authored several publications. She is the volunteer Veterinary Director, Second Chance Wildlife Center (MD) providing veterinary care to injured wildlife. Previously, she worked as the Veterinary Director, Cape Wildlife Center (MA) with education on zoonotic diseases and animal welfare.
Dr. Klein is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine and earned a Master’s Degree in Toxicology at St. John’s University, NY. She completed a Fellowship in comparative pathology at The John’s Hopkins University School of Medicine after a Residency in Avian Pathology at U.C. Davis, CA. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine & the American College of Poultry Veterinarians, and adjunct faculty at University of Maryland and University of Pennsylvania. She worked in veterinary disaster response and was Team Commander of the AVMA VMAT-2 team. She deployed to 9/11 (2001), UK-FMD Outbreak (2001), Hurricane Katrina (2005), and Hurricane Sandy (2012). She trained in oil-spill response and deployed to oiled-wildlife spills in MD and NJ.
