Kerstin Kleinschmidt-Dörr studied veterinary medicine in Hannover and subsequently obtained her PhD on brain tumors. She started as a postdoc at the University of Heidelberg, where she worked as an animal welfare officer and Head of µCT imaging. From 2010, she did research at Merck. When her son turned 2, she wanted to learn how the world works and completed an international MBA in 2019. In 2020, she took on the important and challenging task of leading the Women in Leadership Darmstadt action team, with the goal of bringing more women into leadership positions. In the same year, she moved into a corporate role to leave a footprint as Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of Merck KGaA. She developed a company-wide strategy to position the corporation as a leader in animal science and welfare, as well as sustainable, animal-free research and production. Her team goes beyond corporate boundaries worldwide to improve animal welfare and drive the development of solutions to replace animal testing. She has established a new global Animal Use Governance department and framework and conducts policy work at the global level. In 2022, Kerstin initiated the Marseille Declaration for the Global Implementation of High Standards for Animals Held and Used Internally and Externally by Industry for Scientific Purposes, which sends a clear signal that signatories prioritize and demand higher animal welfare standards in industry.
