Led the transplant team at the University of Maryland with his 30 years of research to perform the world’s first and then second genetically engineered Pig to pig-to-human cardiac Xenotransplantation.
Dr. Mohiuddin is a tenured Professor of Surgery and Director of the Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore, MD, USA.
He previously served as Chief of Transplantation, Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Program, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Director of Xenotransplantation Laboratory at Rush University Chicago, while holding faculty positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and Rush University, Chicago.
Dr. Mohiuddin has been involved in Xenotransplantation Research since 1991 and has started xenotransplantation research programs at Rush University, Chicago, IL, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD, and the University of Maryland Baltimore, MD.
Dr Mohiuddin received his MBBS (MD) degree from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan and after completing his preliminary surgical training at Civil Hospital Karachi, finished his training and fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania and Institute of Cellular Therapeutics (Drexel University).
Dr. Mohiuddin has devoted his entire career, of over 30 years, to xenotransplantation. His contribution to xenotransplantation includes a demonstration of the longest survival of heterotopic and orthotopic cardiac xenotransplantation. He is credited for developing a successful immunosuppressive regimen for cardiac xenotransplantation (Mohiuddin Regimen) that has been instrumental in avoiding xenograft rejection and producing the longest reported survival of cardiac xenografts both in humans and non-human primates.
Additionally, he is the President-elect of the International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA) of the Transplantation Society (TTS). He served as Councilor of IXA for 4 years where he functioned as a liaison to promote productive relationships between IXA and FDA. He has published over 120 papers, over 150 abstracts and has delivered numerous invited presentations on Xenotransplantation. He has secured several NIH and non-NIH grants throughout his academic career. Currently holding several grants totaling over 15 million dollars.
He is an Associate Editor for the journal Transplantation and reviews manuscripts for many other journals. He holds the office of Immediate Past President of the Dow Graduate Association of North America.
Dr. Mohiuddin’s persistence in Xenotransplantation directed him to accomplish the First and then second Pig to Human Cardiac Xenotransplantation at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland on January 7, 2022. He was named by Nature Journal as one of the top 10 people who helped shape science in 2022. Also, he was recently awarded an honorary degree of Doctorate in Science from Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan.
