Marianna is an independent consultant and Editor-in-Chief for the journal, Biopreservation and Biobanking. She advises clients in industry, academia, government and non-profit institutions on biobanking and research policy issues.
Involved in biobanking for more than 25 years, Marianna provided scientific direction and oversight for numerous biobanks at the US National Cancer Institute and the Department of Veterans Affairs. As Deputy Associate Director of the Clinical Research Policy Analysis and Coordination Program in the Office of Science Policy, Office the Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH), she participated in the development of federal policies and educational documents related to biobanking, genomic data sharing, privacy and confidentiality, and health information technology.
Marianna has presented nationally and internationally on biobanking issues, including at numerous workshops at Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research meetings. She has co-authored numerous publications on ELSI issues related to biobanking, including a book chapter in the textbook, Institutional Review Board: Management and Function THIRD EDITION, Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research (PRIM&R); Elizabeth A. Bankert, MA; Bruce G. Gordon, MD; Elisa A. Hurley, PhD; Sharon P. Shriver, PhD.
Marianna was President of the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) from 2007 - 2008. She previously served as Chair of the ISBER Science Policy Committee and is a current Committee member. She received the 2019 ISBER Outstanding Achievement in Biobanking Award and the 2012 ISBER Distinguished Leadership and Service Award.
