Chad P. Nelson, Ph.D., M.S.P.H. is a senior science advisor (toxicologist) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and serves as the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) lead, recognized subject matter expert, and principal advisor to the Chief Scientist and OCS Deputy Director on various cross-cutting activities and initiatives, including providing scientific and policy support and coordination for efforts that are toxicology-related. He is a member of the Human Subject Protection Program Management Staff (HSPPMS), having previously performed the duties of the HSP Executive Officer and served as the FDA Institutional Review Board (IRB) Chair to support and facilitate compliance with HHS and FDA regulations and requirements for research involving human subjects. Dr. Nelson has worked as a toxicologist, senior scientific advisor, project/program manager, and analyst in FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine. Before coming to FDA in 2003, he was a research biologist and National Research Council postdoctoral associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He received his BS in Biology and his MSPH in Toxicology and Health Risk Assessment, both from Tulane University. He earned his PhD in Toxicological Sciences/Environmental Health Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and has a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University.
