Kelly Helmick, DVM, MS, DACZM is the Avian Policy Specialist with the USDA-APHIS-AC. Dr. Helmick graduated from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Missouri-Columbia, followed by an internship in aquatic animal medicine at the Mystic Aquarium. Dr. Helmick completed her clinical residency in zoological and wildlife medicine at the University of Florida where she also earned a Master of Science degree in clinical pharmacology. Dr. Helmick has held clinical and leadership positions at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium, El Paso Zoo, Seattle Aquarium, Woodland Park Zoo, and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Dr. Helmick is a diplomat of the American College of Zoological Medicine and has served as a veterinary advisor for several endangered species conservation programs. She has served as Chair of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarian’s Legislative and Animal Welfare Committee and is a past President of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians. Dr. Helmick has published and lectured on the veterinary health, conservation, and welfare of endangered species and serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed veterinary journals.
