Dr. Workman is the VA IRB Network Director and comes to VACO/ORD following time spent supporting the DoD as a Clinical Research Psychologist. He worked for the Psychological Health Center of Excellence (PHCoE) in Silver Spring Maryland, and before that at the National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2) at Ft. Lewis (Tacoma, Washington). At T2, he and others developed innovative technology solutions to address mental health issues and resilience for Service members, Veterans, and their families. His team collaborated with the VA on several technology projects including mental health-related mobile applications and web-based training programs.
For more than a decade before that, Dr. Workman was active in research administration with a succession of responsibility for the human subject protection programs at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and at Northwestern University. At both the UIC and Northwestern, the IRBs oversaw research conducted at the Jesse Brown VAMC. Following Northwestern, he was hired by Western IRB to be the Director of Operations and was promoted into a Vice President Role.
Dr. Workman was an unaffiliated member of the VA Central IRB when it began and was pleased to return to the VA in his current position as the VA Central IRB HPA. He has served as an external consultant for OHRP in conducting compliance-related site visits. Dr. Workman holds a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Master of Arts degrees in Clinical Psychology and in Theology from Wheaton College Graduate School. Finally, he has been Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Center for Traumatic Stress at the Uniformed Services University and has held adjunct faculty appointments at Wheaton College, Northwestern University, and the University of Washington.
