[IN-PERSON] Half Day Workshop: Models of Tribal Research Governance and Ethical Oversight

This Workshop is being offered in-person only; advanced registration is required.

This half-day preconference workshop will bring together experts in Tribal research ethics to share models and best practices for the governance and ethical oversight of Tribal research. The workshop will provide an overview of various kinds of Tribal IRBs and other entities that oversee research with American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribes and people. Workshop participants will learn how these oversight mechanisms help to ensure that research with Tribal communities is conducted respectfully, with Tribal input and engagement, and in a manner that is responsive to the needs of the community. Ample time will be reserved for questions.

REGISTRATION NOTE: PRIM&R is offering this workshop for free to those actively working/staffing Tribal IRBs and/or supporting research review in Tribal Communities, or those who will be doing this work within the next year, as well as those individuals who work at a Tribal Colleges and are looking to expand research oversight capacity, create policies, etc. If you're interested in attending this course and meet this criteria, complete this application first by November 10. Once the application is reviewed, you'll be instructed on how to register. If you work for a Tribal College or University or for a Tribal IRB and require travel assistance and/or a scholarship to the 2023 PRIM&R Annual Conference, complete the ICB Scholarship application form on this webpage by October 6.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the various models of Tribal IRBs and other entities that oversee research with AI/AN Tribes and people
  • Describe how Tribal IRBs and other oversight entities are responsive to Tribal community needs through distinctive policies and practices
  • Detail how Tribal IRBs work with researchers to enforce research protection issues that are important in Tribal research
  • Implement best practices and resources for Tribal IRB operations
  • Note: A boxed lunch will be offered to those attending this session.
