[IN-PERSON/LIVESTREAMED] Plenary Session: In Community‐‐Research, Partnerships, and the IRB

Community-based participatory research, community partnered research, community-engaged scholarship, community research, and research practice partnerships are different models of research that are grounded in the work of community engagement. Community engagement can be broadly defined as “the process of working collaboratively with groups of people who are affiliated by geographic proximity, special interests, or similar situations with respect to issues affecting their well-being” (CDC: Principles of Community Engagement, 1997). One of the challenges for HRPPs is that community engagement can look very different depending on the project, the stakeholders, and the context. Further, community work often finds itself in tension with the entrenched IRB processes designed to review and approve traditional human subjects research projects. This plenary session will highlight of-the-moment participatory research work and will discuss how HRPPs might support the work benefiting communities. This plenary panel will be followed by a breakout session where attendees may continue the discussion of community engaged work with their colleagues.
