At the 2022 OHRP Exploratory Workshop, former OHRP Director Jerry Menikoff said: "Undue influence only exists when a payment is so huge that it threatens to prevent a person from rationally thinking about the risks and benefits of participation....IRBs seem far more worried about undue influence than OHRP as a regulator." While it seems relatively common for IRBs to approve large sums of compensation for industry-funded biomedical studies, why is there a perceived reluctance on the part of IRBs to pay participants for social-behavioral studies? Placing a value on "appropriate compensation" can become tricky to unpack from the IRB perspective, both in the case of “traditional” vulnerable populations (e.g., minors), as well as other vulnerable populations (e.g., economically disadvantaged, college students, internet-based subjects, etc.).
